Kohahna

Lily O’Connor, age 13
Cabin: Sandpiper
Counselor: Liz McLane

This week for Cabin Day, my cabin went for a hike to the Sandbowl. On the hike up, we saw lots of butterflies. First we stopped at Pyramid Point, and the view was amazing. Then we went on to the Sandbowl, where we took pictures of each other running down to the bottom. On the walk back, we all sang songs together. I had a lot of fun on Cabin Day, spending time with and getting to know my cabin mates better.

My favorite activity we have done so far was the brown-paper-bag skits. It was a funny, but interesting, activity. Our cabin, Juniper, did “America’s Got Talent (but not really).” There were three judges and three skits for them to judge. In the brown-paper-bag skit, we needed to have very specific items. We needed bathing suits, a Kohahna shirt, sunglasses, and other objects. This was a great way to get all of the cabinmates to talk! This was my favorite activity.

Pictured Rocks!

The Pictured Rocks trip as a lot of work, but definitely worth it! All of the beautiful rocks we saw were amazing. Every few minutes we would stop and take pictures. The Pictured Rocks are awe-inspiring.

We stayed at a campsite on Mosquito Beach. The beach was not made up of soft grains of sand, but a rock face. We cooked dinner there, and swam. Lake Superior is very cold. The coldest morning dips here do not even compare. Your feet get numb in only a few minutes. After a day of hiking though, it feels wonderful.

Also, the night we were on Mosquito Beach, we walked down the rock face and went into these caves that were absolutely amazing. We never would have seen them if we hadn’t gone around the corner. The ceilings of the caves looked like cathedral ceilings.

On the Fourth of July, we made it to our campsite very early in the afternoon, so we set up our tents and walked to a beach. We cooked dinner there. On the hike back to our campsite, we decided to sing the National Anthem. So we did. We were passing a group camping site, and the people there joined in and sang along. Then when we got to our campsite, we played with Sparklers.

The Pictured Rocks trip was amazing. Everyone should see them!

VASA Trail Trip

On Thursday, July 5, seven guys from the Leelanau senior section went on an awesome bike trip with Ben Chernivsky and Brock Green. The trip was at times challenging and tested our strength, but it was a lot of fun. We biked 25 km. along the VASA trail, south of Traverse City. The trail included awesome slopes and steep hills that gave us bikers a roller-coaster-like thrill. The trail also gave us a great opportunity to enjoy the scenery and the woods, and also the wild blueberries that grew in patches in the trees. Brotherhood and great food made this an even more exciting trip that we will all remember.

Alex Lamie, age 12
Cabin: Sea Hornet
Counselor: Eli Sinkus

Every week, on Wednesday, we have an event called Cabin Day. This Wednesday, we had off-camp Cabin Day. My cabin decided to go to a town called Empire, where we played on a playground, played basketball, and swam. The whole point of Cabin Day is to bond with our cabin and to become friends with each other.

When we first got there, my cabin Sea Hornet decided to play knock out. After playing for 10 to 15 minutes, we were joined by two other cabins. They were followed by two random kids. Because of this, the game became a lot more exciting. After playing basketball, my cabin decided to swim. Although the water was really cold, it was really fun, because there were big waves. After body surfing and surfing, we returned home. That was a great Cabin Day.

Reed Timoner, age 10
Cabin: Tortuga
Counselors: Max Warner and Drake Schaberg

Hi, I’m Reed Timoner. I am from the cabin of Tortuga. This week, I went on the optional trip of the Early Bird Overnight. It is a hiking trip that can only fit six people, led by two counselors. This year, Leland, Grayson, J.C., Dylan, Tim and I were led by Fred and Tom. We got there, had lunch, and then started to hike. Soon, Tom found out that we had taken the wrong trail, and started calling it a warm-up.

Then we hiked a mile and a half on the right trail. We got to the campsite and played some games, then had dinner. We had cuscus and chicken. Then we made a fire, but it was hard to make it because it rained and the wood was wet. We went to bed, and woke up to m&m pancakes. We finished breakfast, and then hiked half a mile to where Clark met us. He drove us back to camp, where we took showers and went to our activities. It was a great trip.
