Clark’s thoughts on the coming summer!

It’s March and it’s that time of year when the snow begins to melt and we yearn for those warm sandy beaches of summer. It’s also that time of year when we feel the quickening pace of the office through the phone calls and emails from camp parents with questions regarding the coming summer at Leelanau and Kohahna.

I have been traveling about the country sharing the idea of Leelanau with many new families these past few months. It’s easy for me to stand in front of a living room full of parents and let them know just how important Leelanau is for their sons because I believe in what we do. My message is pretty simple and clear. We strive to offer a summer camp program to your children that will foster true and significant spiritual growth in their thought and character.

I am reminded of what Mrs. Eddy writes in her textbook, Science and Health on pages 248 and 249, as we approach the coming summer at Leelanau. We are in the business of “moulding and chiseling thought”! Boys and young men today need to see and understand the freedom and joy that comes from understanding that, as sculptors themselves, they can form those “perfect models in thought”, and feel the freedom that comes from looking “at them continually”. Today with TV, radio, and the internet, “Do you not hear from all mankind of the imperfect model?” It’s thrown at us from all directions. This is where Leelanau changes the picture. We provide that all important training ground where campers can understand and appreciate the “male and female of God’s creating” and see that real and true sense of manhood demonstrated in thought and action. The camaraderie, the adventure, the laughter, the skills learned, the singing, the sportsmanship, the pursuit of excellence are all part and parcel of a summer at Camp Leelanau. YES, we will work together to “turn our gaze in the right direction” and then confidently, together as one camp, we will “walk that way”.

The Leelanau staff is in place. They’re an outstanding group of men that will welcome your sons on opening day. They have answered the call to step up and “Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love – the kingdom of heaven – reign…” throughout the seven weeks of camp. The staff will be led by Ben Chernivsky as Head Counselor and Paul Olsen as Assistant Head. I will be right there in camp working side-by-side with these men all summer long.
