Camps Leelanau & Kohahna - Now and Forever
Dear Friends,
Camps Leelanau and Kohahna continue to make outstanding summer camping programs available to young people enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School, as they have for 85 years. The fundamental ideals that characterized the Camps in their early years have continued undiluted and remain foundational to today’s programs. Now the Board of the Camps is working diligently to see that the same type of summer experience that has blessed so many individuals in the past will remain available to future generations.
Forever: Endowment Fund goal of six million dollars
The Leelanau-Kohahna Endowment Fund has been established with a goal of six million dollars to secure the continued financial strength of the Camps. Gifts contributed to this fund will remain in it, and income from the fund will be used to support capital improvements to the property, to offer camperships to qualified families and to supplement counselor salaries. As the fund increases in size, so will the benefits from it increase.
The goal of The Board of Trustees is to keep the camp experience available to qualified children and to keep staff positions attractive to young men and women. Each year the Camps need to raise significant funds for these purposes as well as for facility renewal. The endowment will provide a dependable source for these demands which will allow the Camp leadership to remain focused on the broader goals for the Camps.
Now: Priorities to prepare for summer 2008
While the Endowment Fund is growing, the Camps face demands to update heavily used equipment and to raise campership funds to make the camp experience available to qualified families. Currently the Camps are working to raise $20,000 to meet the 2008 campership goal.
The Great House has just undergone extensive repairs to its foundation. In the process, much of the landscaping around the front of the building has been destroyed. The cost of this work could easily reach $25,000. Unrestricted funds are always helpful for unforeseen expenses. Our staff has identified the following items as priorities for the coming summer:
- Remodeling Kohahna cabin and reroofing bath house $12,000
- Eagle’s Nest refurbishment $5,000
- Tents, backpacks & other trips equipment $2,000
- Two electric pottery wheels $1,200
- Bikes & helmets $1,200
- Windsurfing sails $1,000
- Riding-ring maintenance equipment $1,000
The Board is committed to keeping the Camps strong and prosperous so that the unique blessings they bestow will continue. There is every reason to believe the future of the Camps is bright and rich with promise. Their blessings will continue to flow and expand as friends and alumnae recognize the importance of the Endowment Fund and consider contributing to it in addition to the General Fund. We invite you to be a part of this deeply meaningful activity.
Sincerely,
Marilyn P. Rinker, Chairman

“Meet at the Big Tree”
If your Leelanau or Kohahna experience happened at the Port Oneida location you most likely have fond memories of meeting by the Big Tree for activities. In fact, it was the site that said, “You have arrived at Camp!” This past year the tree has “donated” a few limbs to Camp. As the limbs have fallen Betty Rhoades, a fixture herself at Kohahna, has taken them and used the wood to create 16 beautiful bowls. (Possibly more to come if more branches fall and Betty is willing.) Each bowl takes on its own unique character and shape depending on what part of the branch it came from. One of the bowls could be yours! For those who donate $1,000 or more, upon your request, a bowl will be sent to you – a memorable thank you for your gift. Donations will be put in the endowment fund to support memories yet to come.
(Please note “Big Tree Bowl” in your donation envelope or if donating online use the comments section at our giving page.
Note: Bowls vary in size from 3” to 5” wide and 4” high.)
