Summer 2007

It is a joy to hear from parents, campers, and staff once the summer season is over. They tell us of fun times and newfound friends, challenges and triumph, growth in character and discovered sisterhood and brotherhood. They learn of grace and love and a sturdy foundation for the future. We know you will enjoy reading some of the comments we get back pretty regularly.

...............

My Christian Science experience at camp this year was great. I had a wonderful Sunday school teacher and I really learned a lot from him and had fun. Many questions I had or problems I was working on were answered and healed. I can’t wait to go back to camp next year as a counselor in training.

In addition to enjoying the fun activities such as horse back riding, swimming, tennis, nature study and drama, our daughter also embraced the responsibilities and discipline (cleaning the cabin and bathrooms, marking her Bible lesson, getting up in the morning on time, following camp rules, etc.), with equal vigor. She developed a strong and immediate love for her counselors, one of which commented that from the time dropped her off at camp, she never stopped smiling.

Camp Kohahna truly is my home away from home and I would never dream of spending my summer any other way. I absolutely love this place. I love everything about it from dipping in Lake Michigan every morning to taps every night, but my favorite part of camp has got to be the people. The atmosphere at Kohahna is so loving and caring.

Kohahna has made me a better person, friend, and Christian Scientist; and I grow so much there. This year has been on of the best summers ever.

I have so much fun and I love all the people and activities at camp. I also love that we get to live and work with Christian Science because it really helps me and teaches me how to be a better person and how to love myself and others.

Her confidence and growth in leadership abilities were tremendous this summer. We are so grateful the opportunities she had at camp which really challenged her, and helped her to grow into a lovely, accomplished camper. Her counselor was a fantastic support to her, as were the other loving and patient staff members for which we are sincerely grateful.

This camp is such an enriching experience and provides the foundation that they can carry with them throughout the year. We have seen such growth, maturity and spiritual understanding as a result of our daughters 4 weeks at camp and this is immeasurable.

He learned to make square corners, step out of his comfort zone and, most importantly, he discovered a whole new concept of brotherly kindness. The Christian Science he has grown up with—and maybe taken for granted—took on a whole new meaning to him. This all came about from the incredible atmosphere at the camp and because of the magnificent role models of the counselors.

This is our daughter’s final year as a camper, and she treasured every day spent on the sands, shores and water of Lake Michigan. She is looking forward to her Counselor-In-Training year and is already busy recruiting girls from her cabin, past and present, to join her.

We are so grateful to you and the camps for helping provide a rich camping experience for our son this summer. This was his second year at Camp Leelanau and he had a great four weeks. He said he grew both physically and mentally, and he was able to participate in a variety of activities. The reports from his counselors noted his maturing ability to resolve conflicts and take a leadership role in cabin and camp activities.

Camp has enriched my life, in my growth in Christian Science and advancing in activities. Being around so many Christian Scientists at camp is awesome. At camp you are not faced with distractions. Everyone knows the Truth and expresses the Truth.

We can see his improved skills in swimming, canoeing and camping. More importantly, we have seen growth in how he embraces new challenges and interacts with others. When recently asked what his favorite part of camp was, he replied “the brotherhood”, and shared the memory of how big and little kids would walk arm in are. Thanks for filling our son’s summer with a unique experience and a truce sense of brotherhood.

My daughter experience tremendous growth at camp. She had a wonderful healing of poison ivy and is confident now of the effectiveness of Christian Science treatment. She prays about EVERYTHING, and she doesn’t let me slip up either. One day last week, I was commenting that I was tired and needed a break. She said, “Just listen to yourself! Your energy comes from God!” While it doesn’t feel too great to be admonished by a 10 year old, I knew she was right. She seems much closer to God after camp this summer and goes to Him for every little thing. The innocence, purity and effective prayer of a child who puts all her faith in God is a blessing to watch.

Camp Leelanau has given me so much over the years and for that I am very grateful. To me, Leelanau is my second home, and it’s like a huge family reunion every time I return. I love reuniting with past friends and making new ones. It has given me many opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and excel in all aspects of life. It has helped me grow spiritually and physically. Camp will always have a special palace in my heart and I will always practice and demonstrate its values.

This past summer was my ninth year at Leelanau. It was also my CT summer and I wouldn’t have missed it for anything in the world! Not only did the CT training program prepare me to be a camp counselor, it gave me direction on how to live my life to the fullest.

I came to better know and understand Christian Science and what I believe. I got some answers to my question and participated in religious discussions during cabin time. I experienced a hug healing while at camp this year that helped me get closer to God. Thank you so much for this incredible opportunity. I can’t wait to go back next year!

We appreciated the loving support of the counselors and staff at camp.

All the counselors were very loving, understanding and king. I hope I can go back next year.

We are very grateful our daughter had the opportunity to attend camp. She loved the structure and activity. While at camp she strove to be more orderly. She made great progress in this area. Camp helped her to see the need to be orderly and at home she is much more willing to help out and do her part. She also appreciated being in an atmosphere where she could openly discuss and practice Christian Science.
-parents of a Kohahna camper

Of all the things our daughter does for her “launch” into life, nothing will help shape and prepare her more than Camp Kohahna. She loves the ground, the horses, the activities, council fires and the spiritual inspiration.
-a Kohahna mom

Our daughter grew in her understanding of the practical relevance of Christian Science and was inspired by the many truths and insights share at camp. -Kohahna parents

Camp presented our daughter the opportunity to be independent and shine as an individual. It was very exciting to receive her letters and her counselor’s reports showing her growth and joy.
-a Kohahna parent

Not only do they love and support you at camp, they also encourage you to take the step outside of your comfort zone, and try something new or unfamiliar to you. I know that I would never have tried Camp Crafts at home, but it turned out to be one of my favorite activities. Going to camp doesn’t mean leaving my family for four weeks; to me it means living with another family.
- a Kohahna camper

I learned how to be a woman of substance and at home I’ll express it. Kohahna is a wonderful place to be in the summer. I love Kohahna.
-a first year camper

An aspect of camp I enjoyed was the atmosphere; the sense of unconditional Love everywhere. I had such a great time at camp. I have decided to return for my CT summer.
–a first year Leelanau camper

Our children had wonderful growing experiences during their time at camp. They overcame challenges within themselves and with others! They learned better how to work with others, how to stand for right and how to continuously apply Christian Science to their daily needs.
-Parents of a Kohahna and a Leelanau camper

Our daughter took great pride in the “quality beads” she earned along with her “perfect dipper” award, and we appreciated the thoughtful camper reports we received from her counselors. It sure sounded to us like her introductory camp experience was first-rate in all respects.
-Parents of a first time Kohahna camper.

The brotherhood at this camp was an experience that I am glad to have had. I’ve been ‘raising the bar” since I left camp. My goal this year is to pass my school classes with all A’s. I hope to come back next year.
