No one is more surprised or happy about the recent sequence of events than I am.  About a year ago, I decided to sell my house and business and take some time off.  I had worked on the staff of the Leelanau-Kohahna Family Camp for the previous several years and always loved doing so; the only downside was that it was just a week and one week never seemed like enough time at Pyramid Point.  So, I contacted Clark Shutt in March and told him of my upcoming self-imposed sabbatical and asked him if there was anything I could do at Camp Leelanau this summer.  I was thinking maybe a week or two but Clark was soon thinking all summer and told me he could needed another counselor for waterskiing; it didn’t take “rocket science” to figure that one out and I was soon on my way to northern Michigan.

As I packed and headed for northern Michigan in early June, I started to have a few doubts and wondered what I had gotten myself in to.  However, as I turned down Port Oneida Road, any such doubts disappeared and I was excited to be back at Leelanau-Kohahna.  The welcome from the Leelanau staff was wonderful and genuine and I was made to feel part of the team.  It took no time at all to realize why i wanted to spend more time at Camp Leelanau; I could immediately tell that this was the finest group of men I had ever worked with and that it was going to be a special summer.

The summer progressed and I participated in activities I hadn’t had a chance to enjoy for years.  The Pictured Rocks trip was awesome and a real treat; I learned why the trips program at Leelanau is so special.  Saturday night soccer is a great tradition and is a wonderful example of fierce competition and fine sportsmanship.  If you haven’t watched or participated in Leelanau Water Polo, well let’s just say it is quite a game.  Whether on a trip or in the cabin, quiet hour study is so inspiring and informative; counselors dig in to the Weekly Bible Lesson, helping to establish and deepen roots in Christian Science.  Meals and singing are the best, and the practice and daily living of Christian Science are outstanding.  The summer flew by, and as we headed towards the end of the season, a wonderful opportunity opened up for me.  I looked back over the events of the previous few years in my life and realized that my path had been prepared for me.  I accepted the position of Director of Leelanau and am eagerly working with the Leelanau-Kohahna staff to learn the ropes.
